Melusine Productions team up with Cartoon Saloon on Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner

News from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market (MIFA), where Variety is reporting that Melusine Productions is joining forces with Cartoon Saloon on their next film, The Breadwinner.

Luxembourg based Melusine has previously worked with Cartoon Saloon on their Oscar nominated and IFTA award-winning Song of the Sea. They were also producers on the sublime Ernest & Celestine.

The Breadwinner, which is based on the novel by Deborah Ellis, tells the story of 11-year-old Parvana, who is forced by circumstances to be the breadwinner for her family in a war-torn Taliban-era in Afghanistan.

Nora Twomey, who was co-director on Cartoon Saloon’s first Academy Award nominated film The Secret of Kells, directs The Breadwinner. The film is co-produced by Canada’s Aircraft Pictures, with financing from the Irish Film Board, Telefilm Canada, and private investors from the United States and the Middle East.

Production started earlier this year, with an expected 2017 release.
